I love teaching Storyline to folks, and I love teaching every session. However, if I had to pick a session that would be my favorite to teach, it would be when we focus on quiz questions. In Storyline, they’re so easy to build! (Although, remember to take the time to craft well-written questions in the first place!) The standard, “out of the box” quiz options are amazing! You get great states (how the objects look) and layers (for question feedback). But it’s inevitable…a question we get asked in almost every session is, “How do I change the way the Correct/Incorrect feedback looks when I build a quiz question?” In this blog entry, we’ll talk about how to transform the look and feel of your feedback pop-up and customize it any way you’d like!
Feedback Masters
When you create a quiz question in Storyline, there are three basic elements:
- the question itself,
- the choices the learner can make, and
- the feedback prompt telling them if they got it correct or incorrect.
The feedback comes in as a layer, and quite often I’m asked, “How do I change the color of the gray box?” or “How do I change the size of the gray box?” etc. The answer lies in the Feedback Masters. Feedback Masters can be found by clicking View | Feedback Masters.
If you’ve worked with Masters before, then this area should look a bit familiar. If not, here is a breakdown of what’s going on…
The corresponding Layouts inherit the properties from the Masters, but you can customize each of the individual Layouts. By default, the gray box is in the Master; therefore, you can’t edit the gray box on the individual Layouts. However, you can easily cut the gray box from the Master and create each individual Layout to have the color, size, or formatting necessary for your design. If there are additional elements that you want repeated on every feedback layer, feel free to add them here as well! In the sample that you can download, I added a character that has an expression appropriate to the feedback layout.
Now, every existing quiz question and new quiz question that you build will utilize the Feedback Master you just created.
Multiple Feedback Masters
When I tell people this, they sometimes ask, “Can I have more than one Feedback Master?” And the answer is, ABSOLUTELY! Just like Slide Masters, you can create multiple Feedback Masters that might change size or functionality. So let’s say you do create a second Feedback Master by clicking View | Feedback Master | Insert Slide Master…
In order to choose the Layout you want to use, right click on the layer itself, then select the option that you’d like to apply. It’s that easy!
Feedback Themes
But that’s not all…
Feedback Masters also have their own Themes that you can save and use in other courses or share with your team! These come with different Theme Fonts, Theme Colors, etc. and should be similar to your Slide Master Themes. That way, when you create the shapes on your layers (whether they’re feedback layers or regular layers), the same font and color is used throughout. So, if you enjoy quiz questions and feedback prompts, but are hoping for a completely different look and feel, look no further than your own imagination!
